Never give bank details over the phone. If the caller says they are a bank, put the phone down and re-call them on the public number.

Check the sender before you open an email. If in doubt, delete.

Put a card in your window beside your front door (or on the front door) saying ‘No Salesmen or Uninvited Callers’. And don’t open the door if you don’t know the person. If necessary, get a ‘spyhole’ put into your door at eye level.

Speak to your bank about any extra checks you want them to make, in case you might get defrauded. Do it soon!

Never respond in any way to an email or phone call that asks for any of your personal details, however plausible it may seem. Just delete the email immediately, and put the phone down.
